I've been running Linux servers for over ten years. A passion became a profession. Today 35+ virtual machines and around 40 containers run on my own Proxmox cluster, behind a multi-tier segmented network, with encrypted, restore-tested backups. That is my own "data center in miniature", documented like a production environment. The simplest sentence about my work: what I offer, I run myself, every day.
It all started with curiosity, a server I wanted to understand rather than just use. The hobby turned into years of real practice: roles at IT service providers and system houses, and alongside them an operation of my own that has grown every year. I learn on real systems, not on slides.
I'm formally completing that path right now: IHK degree as IT specialist for systems integration, expected December 2026. I don't see the career switch as a gap but as a strength. I ran the systems before I held the certificate for them, and so I know how it feels when something breaks at night.
No call center, no ticket ping-pong, no "I'll have to check back". You have one point of contact who makes the decision and stands behind it. That's the advantage when IT operations and development are in the same hands: no blame game between server and code.
